This article provides an overview of the ITIL process Portfolio Management.

A service portfolio contains all of the services managed by the service provider. It includes services in development, those available now, and those that are retired. Portfolio management is the process that controls this, and ensures that only available services are aligned with the organisation. It also ensures that there is a good balance of services that organisations can take advantage of.
The goal of portfolio management is ensuring that the service provider and the organisation are able to generate value from the services offered. This includes value for money, and managing where the service provider is investing is important. This allows the organisation and the IT service provider to partner in making the right investments that align with the organisation’s strategy.

A key factor to success is seeing the portfolio as a whole, rather a number of streams.
